Self-empowerment is about giving yourself the power and authority over how you live your life.
You don’t give someone permission to dictate the direction of your life.
You make sure any power you give away is power you want someone else or something else to have.
You don’t let external expectations (whether spoken or unspoken), or the expectations of the previous version of you (enter previous version who wanted something you no longer want or need or believe is important to you), exert power over your life.
You’re aware of who you are, you know what’s important to you in this season of your life and you take action that reflects what’s inside. You take action from a place of deep awareness and intention.
It’s not necessarily easy, but that’s what it means to stand in your power. You’re going after what you want now and shedding old wants. You’re stepping into the life you want to live now, and letting go of what you thought life would look like for you by now.
It doesn’t mean there aren’t challenges, systemic barriers, and other people and institutions that deeply impact you. They do.
Not everyone has the same opportunities and access. We have to acknowledge systemic and pervasive inequities when we talk about self-agency and self-empowerment.
But our awareness of that impact is also powerful because we choose to stay the course even though we know what does and what might lie ahead.
We choose to pursue the path anyway.
